Odisha is situated between the geographical coordinates of 81.27'E and 87.29'East longitude and 17.49'N and 22.34'North latitude. The state occupies a total area of 155,707 square kilometers. With a blend of several physiographical features, the state is divided into five morphological units, namely: mountainous and highlands region; coastal plains; western rolling uplands; central plateaus; and flood plains.

Rayagada is situated in the southern part of the Odisha. The District occupies a total area of 7,584.7 km2, and is divided into eleven blocks. The population of this district consists mainly of tribal. The Kondhs form the majority of tribal population. The district generates income mainly through agriculture based activities. Paddy, wheat, Millets, ground nut, potato and maize are the major crops grown in the area..

Kashipur block, where SAI is working is located 70kms towards west from District head quarters Rayagada. It is a typical tribal area where more than 70% of the population is Kondh and Paraja tribes, most of whom are poor, backward, generally uneducated and lead a hard life. Food grain yields from subsistence-based farming are not enough to meet the food needs of the family for the whole year.
